Several million tons of titanium dioxide (TiO2) are processed every year worldwide not only in plastic products, but also in paints and varnishes, foodstuffs, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. The EU Commission is pursuing its plan to classify titanium dioxide as a cancer suspect in Annex VI of the CLP Regulation. Such a classification would have a significant impact on the entire process chain, from plastics processing to the material recycling of plastic waste. Against this background, the study analyses and quantifies the concentrations in plastics processing and in the recycling of plastic waste. This is the first time that concrete, comprehensive data on the use of TiO2 in Germany are available.
