Insulation boards with recycled content for residential modernisation

As part of a pilot project conducted by BASF together with partners, EPS insulation boards with recycled content were used.

As BASF, together with the housing association ABG FRANKFURT HOLDING and the manufacturer of external thermal insulation composite systems Sto, reports, the expanded polystyrene (EPS) insulation boards containing recycled material were used on the façade of an ABG existing building with 52 residential units in Frankfurt am Main. The three companies are said to be long-standing business partners. The insulation boards, which were attached to the facade as part of an energy-efficient modernisation project, reportedly contain around 10 percent recycled EPS. A raw material offered by BASF under the brand name Neopor® F 5 McycledTM was used to manufacture the insulation boards. According to the information provided, this is an expandable polystyrene granulate containing graphite. ‘The recyclate comes from mechanically processed EPS waste and contributes to the recycling loop. The aim is to use other recycling streams for the production of Neopor® McycledTM in the future, for example EPS cuttings from construction sites,’ explains Klaus Ries, Head of Business Management Styrenics Europe at BASF. Technical tests on the insulation boards had shown that the newly developed version containing recycled materials meets the same quality standards as conventional products. There were no differences for the craftsmen in the processing and installation of the facade panels either, explained Frank Junker, Chairman of the ABG Management Board.
