GKV: mixed balance of the EU plastics strategy

President of the GKV Gesamtverband Kunststoffverarbeitende Industrie Dr. Helen Fürts in conversation with a participant at the Parliamentary Evening on June 4, 2024

The GKV Gesamtverband Kunststoffverarbeitende Industrie sees its hopes for more value creation through the EU plastics strategy hardly fulfilled.

At its Parliamentary Evening at the German Parliamentary Society in Berlin on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, the GKV gave on the occasion of the upcoming European elections,a mixed assessment of the European Commission's plastics strategy, which was adopted for the first time in 2018. According to a statement from the association, the European plastics strategy was also associated with hopes from industry for additional value creation. These had hardly been fulfilled so far. Instead, companies in the sector were concerned about the enormous increase in bureaucracy and new, sometimes ill-conceived legislation. The President of the GKV, Dr. Helen Fürst, who was unanimously confirmed in office for a further two years by the association's delegates' meeting on the afternoon, said: “In many cases, plastic is the greener solution.” The transformation of the plastics industry to a circular economy is very complex, Fürst continued. It makes sense to take one step at a time.
