Circular Plastics Alliance back in action

The European Commission has reactivated the Circular Plastics Alliance (CPA), reports Euwid.

The Commission had announced this move in December 2025 as part of its proposals for the ‘boosting the circularity of plastics’ package of measures, which aims to support and strengthen the plastics value chain in Europe. With this reactivation, the Alliance is now to be reoriented as a structured and inclusive cooperation platform. According to the information provided, the CPA is also to be expanded. Consequently, the steering committee is set to include the European Federation of Waste Management Associations FEAD and the Association of European Plastics Recyclers Plastics Recyclers Europe (PRE) in future. The CPA secretariat remains based at the Commission. The platform is intended to identify cross-industry priorities and address the key challenges affecting the competitiveness and circularity of the European plastics sector. The Alliance is initially launching its work with three new working groups. These are tasked with analysing challenges facing the plastics industry, prioritising trade policy review needs and improving market surveillance. In addition, measures to boost demand for recycled materials and training programmes for customs and market surveillance authorities are planned. Specific customs codes for recycled polymers are also to be developed to ensure recycled materials are correctly identified. According to the information provided, PRE is to coordinate this work.

Originally founded in 2018, the alliance served to implement the EU Plastics Strategy and aimed to increase the use of recycled plastics in the EU to ten million tonnes annually by 2025.
