WIS invests millions in plastics recycling

The Thuringian family-run business plans to invest around six million euros in expanding its plastics recycling operations over the next three years.
 
Annual production capacity for high-quality post-consumer recycled materials (PCR) is set to be expanded from the current figure of around 10,000 tonnes to approximately 20,000 tonnes, according to the distributor, trader and compounder WIS Kunststoffe GmbH. The company, which has a total of nine sites across Europe – five of which are in Germany – is headquartered in Breitungen and was founded in 1991. According to the company, WIS primarily processes polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) into regranulates. In 2025, the company received official approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for a new process to produce PP recyclate for food contact applications and is also ISCC PLUS-certified. According to WIS, the PCR plastics are used – apart from in contact-sensitive and food applications – for packaging, in the automotive industry, and in stationery and toys.
 
To mark WIS’s 35th anniversary, there was a change at the top of the company. Company founder Siegmar Römhild, who is to continue to support the company in an advisory capacity, handed over the management of the company to his son Daniel Römhild. A graduate in plastics engineering, Daniel was previously an authorised signatory at WIS and has been working for the company for several years. According to reports, he has been involved, amongst other things, in the expansion of the PCR recycling division, the development of new plastics solutions and investment projects.
