Plastics Europe and BDE welcome adoption of PPWR

Plastics Europe, the association of plastics manufacturers in Europe, and BDE, the German waste management association, are now pushing for rapid implementation.

In their statements, the two associations expressed their satisfaction that the European Parliament tacitly adopted the final version of the EU Packaging Regulation (PPWR) in the so-called corrigendum procedure on the evening of November 25. Virginia Janssens, Managing Director of Plastics Europe AISBL, explained: “The regulation is an important step towards making the European plastics system more circular and climate-friendly.” Even though the industry does not agree with all the points of the regulation, it provides the clarity and predictability that European companies urgently need, said Alexander Kronimus, Managing Director of Plastics Europe Germany. “It is crucial that the necessary secondary legislation for this regulation is now developed swiftly.” During the legislative process, Plastics Europe advocated for ambitious and feasible recyclate use quotas, and also for the repurposing and recycling of plastics within an appropriate legal framework.

In a press release from the BDE waste management association, BDE President Anja Siegesmund emphasizes: “The EU Packaging Regulation is a crucial milestone for a resource-efficient circular economy in Europe. Uniform requirements such as minimum quotas for recycled materials and the design of recyclable packaging create urgently needed incentives for high-quality recycling and strengthen the internal market for recyclates.” The BDE supports the rapid introduction of uniform standards for packaging and packaging waste disposal in Europe. The adoption of the PPWR by the European Parliament marked a decisive step in the legislative process, as only the approval of the Council of the European Union is now pending.
