Pipes made from chemically recycled plastic installed in Vienna's water system

Around 660 metres of pressure pipe made from PE100-RC polyethylene have been laid in the Austrian capital, Borealis has announced.

The initiative is the result of an Austria-wide partnership between Borealis, pipe manufacturer Pipelife and Wiener Wasser. The collaboration is said to be in line with Borealis' EverMindsTM platform to accelerate the transition to a circular economy for plastics. The special pipe material BorSafe™ Bc HE3490-LS-H-90 used for the drinking water pressure pipes reportedly contains over 90 per cent chemically recycled components based on a mass balance classification. The material is certified according to ISCC PLUS (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification), which covers the entire supply chain from raw material to end product and guarantees compliance with strict sustainability standards. According to Borealis, Borcycle-C technology fulfils the high purity and quality requirements for materials used in sensitive and demanding applications such as drinking water. The technology is said to be used to chemically recycle polyolefin-based waste into plastics that are as good as new. John Webster, Borealis Global Commercial Director Infrastructure, explains: ‘We have a long track record of providing innovative and advanced pipe solutions to the global infrastructure industry. We look forward to continuing this tradition by expanding our offering to include more sustainable solutions.’ The project is to pave the way for future collaborations.
