New chair elected for negotiations on plastics treaty
Chilean Julio Cordano has been appointed by the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) as the next chair for the negotiations on the plastics agreement.
According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), which is leading the negotiations, Chilean Ambassador Julio Cordano will take on the role of INC Chair in the coming rounds to continue negotiations on an internationally binding global plastics agreement. Upon accepting the position, Cordano said: "Plastic pollution is a planetary problem that affects every country, every community and every individual. Therefore, a treaty is urgently needed to support joint action and bring us together to address this shared responsibility." Linroy Christian (Antigua and Barbuda) was appointed deputy chair.
In August last year, heads of state and government gathered in Geneva, Switzerland, to conclude an agreement with the so-called INC 5.2, but the negotiations ended once again without agreement. The UNEP has not yet announced a new date for the next round of negotiations.
