At the start of the new men's Bundesliga season, 17 out of 18 stadiums are using reusable cups, according to a survey.
According to the German Environmental Aid (DUH), this was determined by a survey of all 18 clubs in the first Bundesliga. Only FC Schalke 04 wanted to continue offering drinks in disposable plastic cups. "17 out of 18 first division soccer clubs now use reusable cups when serving drinks. This is a great success for the environment and the result of our years of campaigning against single-use plastic waste in sport," says DUH's national managing director Barbara Metz. For the current season, DUH reckons that Schalke 04's Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen will have more than one million disposable plastic cups. The environmental association also surveyed the soccer clubs in the second and third leagues. According to preliminary results, here too many clubs still wanted to continue using disposable cups to serve drinks. According to DUH, more than 9 million disposable containers were used in the 2018/19 soccer season.
