German Packaging Award for ten plastic solutions

The 34 winners of the German Packaging Award 2023 include ten packaging solutions that are made of plastic or contain plastic.

Innovations from England, Germany, the Netherlands and Austria were convincing in the cross-material competition organised by the German Packaging Institute (dvi). "The challenges that packaging has to face have changed over the past decades. Our products have to face more and more expectations and requirements and find new solutions," says Kim Cheng, Managing Director of the Deutsches Verpackungsinstitut e. V. (dvi). Sustainability, circular economy and climate and environmental protection were also a clear focus of the submissions in 2023, she said. According to the dvi, the award ceremony will take place on 13 September 2023 in the Berlin Meistersaal at Potsdamer Platz. The winners of the Gold Award, which additionally honours particularly groundbreaking innovations from among the packaging award winners, are also to be announced there.

Among the total of 34 winners of this year's packaging award are one third plastic solutions, seven of them in the sustainability category. The discounter Aldi Süd, for example, won the prize in this category for a detergent packaging of the Tandil brand, which consists of 92 percent recycled material. Krones AG was also convincing in the sustainability category with a prototype of an ultra-light 550 millilitre PET bottle "Shoulder Flex", in which the weight could be reduced to less than 6 grammes through a new bottle design. For plastic tubes made of monomaterial, Linhardt GmbH & Co. KG received two awards in the same category. Other "plastics winners" in the sustainability category are Boomerang Systems UG for a reusable shipping packaging in various sizes, Südpack GmbH & Co. KG for a film concept for a blister pack made of polypropylene, and Henkel AG for transparent rPET bonnets in blister packs of toilet fragrance flushers made of PET from household collection.

Südpack GmbH also received another award in the "New Material" category for a recyclable mono-material bag that can be used in cheese ripening. A booklet label called EcoSlim ECL from the company CCL Label Solutions GmbH made of paper, cardboard, carton and plastic was awarded a prize in the category "Economic Efficiency". Last but not least, the TrinkSchach (see photo) by student Melina Mamberger and student Theodor Hörchner from the Berlin University of Applied Sciences (BHT) received the Young Talent Award sponsored by Fachpack. The bottle plus lid can be used as a chess piece after use and correspondingly many bottles can be put together to form a chess game. The added value and additional benefits convinced the jury of the Packaging Award 2023.
