EU Packaging Regulation is in force

Since the beginning of February, the new regulations have been in force that are intended to make the packaging sector more sustainable and competitive.

With the new measures of the Packaging and Packaging Waste (PPWR) Regulation, which came into force on 3 February 2025, Brussels wants to improve resource efficiency, promote a more circular use of materials, increase competitiveness and improve economic security, the EU Commission announced. It should also significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption and environmental costs in the packaging industry, it says. According to the Commission, the new measures aim to develop a single market for waste, secondary and reusable materials, promote recycling and reduce dependence on primary resources. They include promoting reuse and refilling as alternatives to single-use packaging and improving consumer information. The regulation is to create jobs and drive innovation in packaging solutions, as well as increasing efficiency in the recycling sector. The Commission will now focus on implementing the new regulation.
