Envalior and Secara: circular PA6 for automotive applications

Envalior, a supplier of engineering plastics, and the Aachen-based recycling start-up Secara aim to drive forward the production of circular polyamide 6 (PA6).
 
The two companies intend to collaborate to enable the conversion of plastic waste from end-of-life vehicles into circular PA6 for automotive applications on an industrial scale, according to a statement from Envalior. As part of the collaboration, Secara’s catalytic depolymerisation process is to be tested and validated. Secara’s technology aims to produce high-purity, drop-in-compatible raw materials that could be used directly in Envalior’s existing PA6 manufacturing process. “Our recycling process is designed to process large-scale industrial mixed waste streams containing material inclusions such as glass fibres, flame retardants and other additives or contaminants. We selectively break down the target polymers in these waste streams and convert them into drop-in-quality monomers,” explains Fabian Nagel, CEO of Secara. With an successful upscale the solution is intended to help car manufacturers meet the upcoming recycling content requirements under the End-of-Life Vehicles Regulation (ELVR) without compromising material performance, the statement continues.
