Drugstore chain DM: Use of recyclate for own brands

HDPE recyclates from the British company Biffa are to be used in packaging for DM's own brands, reports Euwid.

According to the drugstore chain DM, the tubes of the personal care and cosmetics brands Balea, Babylove and Alverde are to be redesigned to use recycled material and reduce the overall weight. According to DM, the use of recycled material in the tubes of Balea Professional shampoos and conditioners will replace around 86 tonnes of virgin material per year. In addition, a material-reduced tube closure is to be introduced, which is to save around 23 per cent of closure material. The packaging changeover would have already started in all German DM shops. The packaging concept will also be extended to other products. The recycled material (rHDPE) used by Biffa is obtained from recycled milk canisters, explained Kerstin Erbe, Managing Director of Product Management at DM. In a press release, the company assumes that an additional 16 tonnes of plastic per year can be saved by changing the caps. According to the Karlsruhe-based drugstore chain, 43 per cent of the packaging for its own-brand products is already made from recycled plastic. DM wants to increase this proportion to 50 per cent by 2025 and focus on the use of mono-material packaging.

British waste management company Biffa claims to be the world's first supplier of recycled HDPE made from post-consumer material that is suitable for reuse with food contact. The company states that it has an annual production capacity of around 83,000 tonnes of recycled HDPE and PP. It also has activities in the PET sector.
