Borouge International Expands Capacity for Recycled Polyolefins
The company is increasing its capacity for recycled polyolefins by 14,000 metric tons per year.
At Niedergebra in Germany, annual production of recycled mixed polyolefins at the former mtm plastics facility is set to increase by nearly 9,000 metric tons, according to Borouge International. According to the company, the plant processes mixed post-consumer polyolefin waste into recycled materials for rigid applications. The additional capacity is expected to come online in the first quarter of 2027.
At Wildon in Austria, formerly Ecoplast, Borouge International plans to expand its capacity for recycled polyethylene by up to 5,000 metric tons per year, with a focus on flexible packaging applications. According to Borouge, the expansion is expected to come online in the fourth quarter of 2027.
The company stated that these investments are a response to the growing demand for mechanically recycled polyolefins from Europe. This demand is said to be driven by regulatory requirements, such as the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), as well as by rising industrial demand.
Dirk Langhammer, Senior Vice President of Circular Solutions at Borouge International, explains: “Circular materials are a strategic resource in Europe and worldwide. They not only help meet sustainability and regulatory requirements but also strengthen the industry’s competitiveness, brand differentiation, and the resilience of supply chains."
Borouge International was formed in March 2026 through the merger of Borealis, Borouge Plc, and Nova Chemicals. The global company, headquartered in Vienna with offices in Europe, the Middle East, and North America, is owned in equal parts by the Austrian energy, fuel, and chemicals group OMV and XRG, the investment arm of the state-owned oil company ADNOC (Abu Dhabi National Oil Company) from the United Arab Emirates.
