Borealis: non-food material with 85 per cent recycled content

Borealis is introducing a recycled LLDPE with 85 per cent recycled content for flexible non-food packaging.

The rLLDPE (linear low density polyethylene) presented under the name Borcycle™ M CWT120CL was reportedly developed together with Ecoplast, a member of the Borealis Group. According to Borealis, it is made from 85 per cent post-consumer recycled (PCR) and 15 per cent LLDPE virgin material and is said to be suitable for demanding applications where sustainability and recyclability play a major role. The new flexible packaging material is reportedly produced from post-consumer waste using Borealis' mechanical recycling technology, Borcycle M, and is suitable for blown film applications in the packaging sector. According to Borealis, the main applications include stretch films and hoods, as well as films for agricultural and industrial applications, and protective films. ‘With an impressive 85 per cent post-consumer recyclate content, this new rLLDPE grade represents an important step towards a circular economy for plastics,’ explains Peter Voortmans, Borealis Commercial Director Consumer Products Flexibles. The material would help customers achieve their sustainability goals while meeting the high performance standards required for demanding flexible packaging applications.
