BMUKN Launches “Circular AI Hub” Platform

The Federal Ministry for the Environment (BMUKN) aims to promote applications of artificial intelligence in the circular economy with this new innovation platform.
 
The ministry states that modern tools for promoting innovation and technology are to be used to develop, scale, and implement AI solutions for the circular economy. In addition, the initiative aims to better connect stakeholders and make existing knowledge more accessible. According to the BMUKN, the “Circular AI Hub” is one of the central elements of the National Circular Economy Strategy (NKWS). According to the information provided, it is aimed at industry, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), startups, and scale-ups. The hub is designed to support innovations throughout the entire development process—from the initial idea through testing to scaling up in practical applications, the ministry adds. The ministry is focusing on three areas: technology transfer projects, the multiple use of successful solutions, and the establishment of a strong innovation ecosystem for AI in the circular economy. To kick things off, the Circular AI Hub is launching the idea competition “AIDEAS #1 – Ideas for Circular Business Models.” The competition seeks ideas from academia, business, and society that tap into the potential of artificial intelligence for business models in the circular economy. According to the announcement, interested parties can submit their concepts to the BMUKN by October 16, 2026. The winners are scheduled to be presented on November 10, 2026, at the Circular AI Hub Forum.
 
Federal Environment Minister Carsten Schneider commented on the platform’s launch: “With the circular economy, we’re not only helping the environment and avoiding climate-damaging emissions. We’re also ensuring that the German economy becomes more competitive and resilient, securing our long-term supply of raw materials, and tapping into new areas of growth. Artificial intelligence can make a valuable contribution along the way. That is why we are supporting companies through the Circular AI Hub to put their ideas into practice even faster.”
