Reclay and Coca-Cola Austria have presented an app solution as part of their RecycleMich initiative, which aims to reward consumers for properly disposing of single-use beverage containers and thus increase the efficiency of the collection system. The app is reported to be a first step towards increasing the return rate in Austria, where there is no deposit solution for single-use beverage containers, and shall be continuously developed. Users of the RecycleMich app, which would be initially launched and evaluated in Vienna, can reportedly view the route to the nearest garbage can in the city, scan the barcode on the PET bottle or beverage can and then dispose of it correctly. The reward for recycling correctly, is said, is automatic entry into sweepstakes with prizes such as vouchers for hotel stays or gastro delivery services, among others. Those who correctly dispose of more bottles or cans receive more points and thus increase their chances of winning prizes. The initiative's supporters include more than 35 beverage brands, including Almdudler, Eckes-Granini, Innocent, Rauch, Red Bull, Vöslauer, and Waldquelle, in addition to Coca-Cola Austria. By 2029, beverage producers in Austria aim to achieve a collection rate of 90 percent for single-use beverage containers in line with the EU target.
