The online retail giant no longer wants to use plastic bubble wrap in shipping.
Instead, the company says it is now relying on cushioning material made from packing paper to prevent movement in boxes and protect items. It is said to be 100 percent recycled and recyclable. Amazon merchants using the "Shipping by Amazon" service are also to be required to use the packing paper. This is the latest step by Amazon to reduce single-use plastic packaging in German logistics centers, is said. Packaging that is easy to recycle was important for customers and for Amazon. "Eliminating plastic bubble cushions is another step toward packaging that our customers can easily recycle close to home," said Olivier Pellegrini, director of customer delivery experience at Amazon. Plastic filler material, however, could still be used if needed, for example, to protect fragile items such as glass or products placed at the front door from the elements.
