At the beginning of 2021, the Alpla Group had announced that it would invest an average of 50 million euros annually in the further expansion of its recycling activities until 2025. Now the Austrian specialist for packaging solutions and recycling, as the company calls itself, is reporting the next step: the acquisition of BTB PET-Recycling GmbH & Co. KG from Bad Salzuflen in North Rhine-Westphalia. The company recycles used PET bottles into recycled material, which is mainly used to produce new beverage bottles. BTB stands for bottle-to-bottle and thus for a closed cycle for bottles from the region. The processing capacity is to be 20,000 metric tons per year.
Only recently, Alpla and its partners announced the establishment of the joint venture "PET Recycling Team Targu Mures" for the recycling of post-consumer PET bottles in Romania. This is intended to strengthen the material cycle in Central and Southeastern Europe, it says. The goal was to produce 15,000 tons of food-grade rPET for this region. The Alpla Group says it still plans to internationalize its measures for high-quality recyclates. Overall, the annual capacity of Alpa's recycling activities, including joint ventures and cooperations, is expected to be around 130,000 tons for PET and 60,000 tons for PE.
